Rabbit Update.
Thanks Ms. O' Regan for the update!!
|
SnowBall and BlackJack are in very good form. They enjoy being at home with me. They have one hutch in the garden and another one in the shed, where they sleep at night . Mr. O’Regan is currently building a run for them, so that they will have more space for hopping and jumping. I have to be careful when I let them hop freely in the garden in case they get hurt by a cat or a dog. SnowBall can do some very impressive binky jumps. SnowBall continues to enjoy eating cardboard and BlackJack enjoys burrowing and digging holes in the garden.

Pearl Harbour - Luke's Project
The attack on Pearl Harbour was a surprise, pre-emptive military strike by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service upon the United States (a neutral country at the time) against the naval base at Pearl Harbour in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, just before 08:00, on Sunday morning, December 7th, 1941. The attack led to the United States' formal entry into World War II the next day. The Japanese military leadership referred to the attack as the Hawaii Operation and Operation AI, and as Operation Z during its planning. Japan intended the attack as a preventive action to keep the United States Pacific Fleet from interfering with its planned military actions in Southeast Asia against overseas territories of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the United States. Over the course of seven hours there were coordinated Japanese attacks on the U.S.-held Philippines, Guam and Wake Island and on the British Empire in Malaya, Singapore, and Hong Kong. The attack commenced at 7:48 a.m. Hawaiian Time. The base was attacked by 353 Imperial Japanese aircraft (including fighters, level and dive bombers, and torpedo bombers) in two waves, launched from six aircraft carriers. All eight U.S. Navy battleships were damaged, with four sunk. All but USS Arizona were later raised, and six were returned to service and went on to fight in the war. The Japanese also sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, an anti-aircraft training ship, and one minelayer. 188 U.S. aircraft were destroyed, 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 others were wounded. Important base installations such as the power station, dry dock, shipyard, maintenance, and fuel and torpedo storage facilities, as well as the submarine piers and headquarters building (also home of the intelligence section) were not attacked. Japanese losses were light, 29 aircraft and five midget submarines lost, and 64 servicemen killed. Kazuo Sakamaki, the commanding officer of one of the submarines, was captured. Japan announced a declaration of war on the United States later that day (December 8th in Tokyo), but the declaration was not delivered until the following day. The following day, December 8th, Congress declared war on Japan. On December 11th, Germany and Italy each declared war on the U.S., which responded with a declaration of war against Germany and Italy. There were numerous historical precedents for the unannounced military action by Japan, but the lack of any formal warning, particularly while peace negotiations were still apparently ongoing, led President Franklin D. Roosevelt to proclaim December 7th, 1941, "a date which will live in the history books. Because the attack happened without a declaration of war and without explicit warning, the attack on Pearl Harbour was later judged in the Tokyo Trials to be a war crime. |

Having a Bunny Good Time!!!
The baby rabbits are 12 weeks old now. They are almost as big as their parents, Snow Ball and Black Jack. They have very healthy appetites and love eating hay, pellets and fresh vegetables. I am kept very busy, cleaning out the 2 hutches. Having a pet is a big responsibility but a very enjoyable one. I was also in touch with Liam last week and he said that the chicks are doing great and are young hens now. I was delighted to hear the good news and thanks again to Liam for giving us such an amazing experience, hatching out the chickens.

I really love the work of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler - here is their contribution to Social Distancing! Thanks to Mr Davoren for sending this on. Ms O'Regan's Rabbit Update! Hi Boys, I hope you are all keeping well and safe. The baby rabbits are 11 weeks old now. This week, I separated Black Jack, the mother rabbit from her babies. Black Jack is now back in the same hutch with SnowBall,( who has been neutered). SnowBall is delighted with the company. The 2 babies are in a separate hutch and they are also very happy. Their hutches are right beside each other, so they are not too lonely. I gave all the rabbits some carrots, cabbage and turnips this week and they really enjoyed them. Best wishes, Ms.O'Regan :) |
As part of our Health Promoting Schools initiative Ms O'Regan gives us a positive quote or two each week.

Hi Boys,
I hope you are all keeping well and safe. The baby rabbits are 10 weeks old now. Breaking News!!!!! They were at the vet on Wednesday for their check-up and Sandra informed us that we have in fact, 2 boys. I was delighted with the good news. I let them out in the garden today for a hop and a jump and they loved it. They had great fun playing together and exploring the garden. At one stage, we couldn’t find the black and white little fellow but Mr.O’Regan later discovered him, curled up inside a flowerpot. He was super cute. As you know, the black and white fellow has very long hair. He is a Cashmere Lop Rabbit. His long fur requires regular combing and brushing and today I gave him a bit of a haircut. The babies will need to be separated from their mother, Black Jack very soon. I gave all the rabbits some carrots and cabbage this week and they really enjoyed them. Any suggestions for names would be most welcome, Best Wishes Ms.O’Regan. |

Bunny Update
Hi Boys,
I hope you are all keeping well and safe. The baby rabbits are 9 weeks old now. They are no longer feeding from their mother. They are eating hay and pellets and occasionally, I give them a carrot as a treat. They are great fun to watch. The little grey fellow can do some impressive somersaults. I call them Binky jumps. They are getting bigger and stronger every day. Black Jack and Snowball are keeping well also. Black Jack continues to be very bossy. The other night, when I was cleaning out their hutches, Snow Ball jumped from one hutch into the other. I was impressed by how high he could jump. They are all getting on well together. The babies will be going to the vet soon to see if they are boys or girls. I have a feeling that the grey one may be a girl and the black and white one a boy but I’m not certain. Before we left, we hadn’t officially given them names, we had great suggestions like Flopsy, Cottontail, Theodore and Waffles, and so if you have any other suggestions on good names for them, I’d love to hear your suggestions. Best Wishes, Ms.O'Regan. |
